Newtown Township — mailing address Newtown Square — is a 10.11-square-mile municipality in Delaware County incorporated in 1684, making it the oldest township in the county by recorded history. William Penn platted the townstead at the intersection of Newtown Street Road and Goshen Road in 1683, and the first Friends Meetinghouse on that site was completed in 1711; five properties within the township are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Old St. David’s Church (1715), Bartram’s Covered Bridge (1860), and the Square Tavern (1742).
