6 Things to Do With the Kids This Holiday Season

6 Things to Do With the Kids This Holiday Season

There are few places in the country as beautiful as Pennsylvania during the holiday season. Christmas traditions and celebrations go back generations, and the snowy backdrop makes for spectacular winter wonderlands. With the kids home from school for the winter break, it’s the perfect time to get out together and build some family traditions of your own!

Here are the top 7 holiday activities we recommend in and around Chester County:

#1 Santa’s Express – West Chester

Santa’s Express, run by the West Chester RailRoad, is a wildly popular Christmas event. Running every weekend in December, the 90 minute train ride runs through the Chester Creek Valley. Santa’s Express train is heated and fully decorated, and passengers are greeted by Ol’ Saint Nick himself at the Market Street Station. The Express ends in Glen Mills, where passengers can take photos with Santa and enjoy the historic square.

Tickets to Santa’s Express can be purchased in person on the day of the ride. Seating is limited, so get there early to secure your family’s spot!

#2 A Longwood Christmas – Kennett Square

A Longwood Christmas at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square is one of the most visually stunning events of the year. Running from Nov. 22 – Jan. 6th, A Longwood Christmas features over 50 decked out Christmas trees and 16,000 seasonal plants. The whole event is brought to life by a staggering half a million lights! And in case that wasn’t enough, there are carolers strolling about, fountain shows set to dance along to holiday songs, and three bonfires for those who want to enjoy a night under the stars.

Timed tickets for the event can be purchased here. Don’t forget, the event is both inside and outside, so grab a jacket before you go!

#3 Brandywine Christmas – Brandywine

The Brandywine River Museum of Art is hosting the Brandywine Christmas exhibit, which runs from Nov. 23 – Jan. 6th. Brandywine Christmas is famous for its o-gauge model train – one of the largest in the country! According to their website, the train features “nearly 2,000 feet of track and includes more than 1,000 pieces, including locomotives, passenger and freight trains, and trolleys that pass through a small town, a farm, factories and even a carnival.”

Special events take place most Saturdays between now and January 6th. The Brandywine River Museum of Art also hosts several “sensory-friendly” events, making the Brandywine Christmas exhibit a truly inclusive family experience. Be sure to check their calendar for more information.

#4 Winter Wonderland at Linvilla Orchards – Media

Christmas Around the Farm is a month-long event (Dec. 1st – 23rd) in which Linvilla Orchards is transformed into a winter wonderland, with no detail overlooked. Family-friendly events include cutting your own Christmas tree, visits with Santa, and caroling hayrides around the farm. If cutting down your own Christmas tree isn’t appealing to you, don’t worry – Linvilla Orchards also sell pre-cut trees and holiday plants like poinsettias. And don’t forget to swing by the Christmas shop to snag an ornament to commemorate the trip.

Tickets for hayrides and more can be purchased on site.

#5 Christmas at Peddler’s Village – Bucks County

Peddler’s Village is the perfect place to shop and stroll because it is home to more than 70 specialty stores and restaurants. During the holiday season, the entire countryside village is decorated with thousands of lights, and on the weekends, Santa comes down from the North Pole to meet all the good girls and boys. Adults will enjoy the murder mystery dinner theater Homicide and Holly. Shoppers will also be able to view the 75+ gingerbread houses on display there as a part of the annual competition, but try not to eat any of them!
